AI Watermarking, Marketing & Refocus!

The recent watermarking of Claude is interesting. On one hand, it feels heavy-handed and easy to circumvent. On the other, I appreciate the effort to address one of the most annoying side effects of generative AI which is the sheer onslaught of AI-generated marketing content and copy.

When used tactfully, AI-generated content can be useful and engaging. But more often than not, it’s producing a whole lot of crap.

Part of Anthropic’s message here seems to be that AI has far more important applications than simply generating more content with science and healthcare being an obvious example. So it’s refreshing to see more stories about organizations actually working in these spaces.

If you know where to look, there’s daily inspiration in AI right now. But if you only follow the headlines, it’s easy to get sucked into the polarization spiral.

As my motorcycle instructor always said: “Be aware of the ditch, but don’t stare at it …or you’ll end up in it! Focus your attention on where you want to go.”
