AI Chatbots Effectively Reduce Conspiracy Theory Belief by 21%

In just a few minutes of interacting with an AI chatbot, study participants “experienced a shift in thinking that lasted for months”. Really interesting stuff, but it also raises the question of who defines what absolute *truth* is. Apparently the team “team asked a professional fact-checker to assess the accuracy of information provided by the chatbot, who confirmed that none of its statements were false or politically biased.” Sounds great, but is what we “know” to be true, *always* the absolute truth? Researchers have found that artificial intelligence (AI) could be a powerful tool in addressing conspiracy theories. A study published in Science on September 12, led by Thomas Costello from American University, demonstrated that a chatbot designed to debunk false information could effectively change people’s minds. Participants who interacted with the chatbot experienced a notable shift in their beliefs, which lasted for months.

How It Works

The study used a custom chatbot built on GPT-4 Turbo, a large language model (LLM) from OpenAI. Participants described a conspiracy theory they believed in, explained why they thought it was true, and rated their conviction. The chatbot then engaged in a detailed conversation, providing evidence and arguments to counter the conspiracy theory. Each interaction lasted about eight minutes, and the chatbot’s responses were thorough, often reaching hundreds of words.

Benefits

The results were promising. Participants’ confidence in their conspiracy theories decreased by an average of 21% after interacting with the chatbot. Additionally, 25% of participants went from being confident about their beliefs to feeling uncertain. This suggests that AI can effectively debunk harmful ideas and potentially reduce the spread of misinformation.

Concerns

Despite the promising results, there are some concerns. The participants were paid survey respondents, which might not represent people deeply entrenched in conspiracy theories. Additionally, AI chatbots have a tendency to ‘hallucinate’ false information, although this study took steps to avoid that by using a professional fact-checker to verify the chatbot’s responses.
