AI Revolutionizes Teaching at Richland School in Mansfield, Ohio

While some schools are banning AI, the ones that are experimenting with it are more effectively preparing their kids for the future. And so TODAY I am teaching AI to our kiddo’s middle school class. FUN! I made a lesson plan in which I walk students through researching a topic (Wikipedia+NotebookLM), to creating a story about it (Claude/ChatGPT), then creating imagery for the story (DALL-E/Leonardo), have AI read the story (ElevenLabs), and finally have them make a song about it (Suno). I made a practice video of the lesson plan which you can watch on my YouTube—and share with your kids if you like it! I love teaching people how to use new technology, and I applaud our principal for being bold and forward thinking.

I’ve included an interesting article and some more thoughts on the topic (see below) but first, here’s the video (and here’s the lesson plan and screenshots):

In a recent article by Danielle Wiggins, published on November 11, 2024, we get a glimpse into how artificial intelligence (AI) is being woven into the fabric of education at the Richland School of Academic Arts in Mansfield, Ohio. Dan Jones, a social studies teacher, is among the 18% of K-12 educators in the U.S. using AI in their teaching, according to research by RAND. Jones has been exploring AI’s potential since December 2022 and is now at the forefront of integrating it into his classroom.

Jones utilizes a digital platform that mimics Netflix to deliver lectures and content to his 7th and 8th-grade students. Additionally, he employs a chatbot developed by SchoolAI, an educational tech company, which is designed to engage students in critical thinking rather than just providing answers. This approach encourages students to reflect and delve deeper into the subject matter.

One of the notable aspects of this technology is its ability to assist students without doing the work for them. The SchoolAI chatbot prompts students to brainstorm and process information, helping them through the writing process without writing on their behalf. This feature alleviates concerns about students using AI to cheat, as it guides rather than completes tasks for them.

Seventh-grader Keymonty Brooks appreciates the chatbot’s quick and non-judgmental responses, while twelve-year-old Levi Rabquer finds it fascinating to interact with a non-human entity that provides multiple answers to choose from. These interactions highlight the potential benefits of AI in education, such as personalized learning experiences and reduced anxiety over making mistakes.

However, the integration of AI in education is not without its challenges. According to the 2024 Voice of the Superintendent Survey by EAB, while 97% of school leaders believe in the importance of teaching students how to use AI effectively, only 37% have a plan to do so. At the Richland School of Academic Arts, only eight teachers are currently using the SchoolAI program, indicating a need for broader adoption and training.

Possible Business Use Cases

  • Develop a platform that provides AI-driven personalized learning plans for students, adapting to their unique learning styles and paces.
  • Create an AI-powered tool that assists teachers in creating interactive and engaging lesson plans, reducing their workload and enhancing classroom experiences.
  • Launch a service that offers AI-based tutoring and homework assistance, providing students with instant feedback and support outside school hours.

As we consider the integration of AI in education, it’s crucial to weigh the positive aspects against potential challenges. While AI offers opportunities for personalized learning and efficiency, it also raises questions about dependency and the need for human empathy in teaching. The key lies in finding a balance where AI complements the educational process without overshadowing the invaluable role of teachers. As we move forward, it’s essential to ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically, fostering an environment where both technology and human interaction thrive.
